I was
with Billy Squier and he was wearing some terrible makeup, with lots of
eyeliner. He looked kinda like RuPaul or either Tim Curry in "Rocky
Horror". I remember telling him, "I'm gonna kiss you even though
you have on lipstick."
Then I was at a Hall
& Oates concert. I was wearing a brown baseball cap. The
stage was really strange, the back of it went upwards like stadium seating.
Daryl was VERY young looking (circa Voices, 1981). Seems like he
was wearing a light blue denim shirt, and I don't remember specifically
seeing John. They sang a bunch of their hits and I was close to one
part of the stage, way on the right (on John's side? Which wouldn't
explain why I didn't see him!). At one point, as Daryl was singing,
he went across the stage from left to right, looking every single person
in the eye...I think he was letting people touch his hands, too.
Later on, he disappeared for a while, he went up the stadium steps at the
back and I suppose into a dressing room. He came back out a little
later and sat down at this grand piano and started playing a song I didn't
recognize. Some girl near me was saying, "I can't believe he's playing
this one!" And she named the song, but I didn't catch the full title.
It was something about "the city" and so I figured it must've been off
of "Beauty On A Backstreet" or was an old Motown song I was unfamiliar
with.
Then me and Walter
were at a David Lee Roth concert (or either old Van Halen). We were
putting down plywood in this attic. Before the concert started, I
was wandering around the building. It was an old church or something.
I remember looking under the stage and seeing access to the backstage area
(although you would've had to crawl to get there). There was some guy next
to me, and he started talking about the "old days" when prostitutes flocked
to concerts and were really expensive. I looked to my left and Alan
Autry was standing there. He started joking with the guy about the
expensive prostitutes, he said they used to charge $800 a night and he
made the comment that they didn't charge as much anymore because "we can't
come as fast as we used to." The other guy laughed and so did I,
although I was surprised that he said that in my presence (I wasn't offended,
though). I remember thinking, "I gotta tell Walter about this!"
I asked how old the building was and one of them told me "It was built
in 1820" and I said, "Oh really, I would've thought maybe 1900," as if
I'm any judge of architecture.
Then
I was getting plywood out of this back room and taking it up this ladder
to the attic. Walter was already in the attic, and somehow he was
sliding the plywood across the floor almost on top of me. He told
me to get another piece, so I went back down to the back room again.
Between the back room and the ladder to the attic was a small walkway.
One side of the walkway was up against the wall, the other dropped off
to a dirt floor, like a barn, about two or three feet down. The dirt
floor was not very wide, it was just long, the entire length of the wall.
It was maybe 8 feet wide at best. This dirt floor was where David
Lee Roth was at, where he was singing. The concert was in progress,
and I could see and hear him each time I walked across this walkway from
the attic ladder to the back room. At some point, I met Dave, and
he seemed to be really nice. He was very people-friendly, and really
liked meeting fans. One of the times I was walking on the walkway,
Dave pointed to me and said to the audience, "She's sweet." (I thought
that was pretty cool!) So I went to get the last piece of plywood,
and when I did, I noticed it was all split and falling apart. I picked
it up and attempted to get it through the doorway, but it began to break
up into pieces that were holding onto each other by threads. The
audience noticed me and Dave looked back at me and started to laugh.
He said, "Honey, I believe you need a new piece of wood," and the audience
began laughing as I held it up so everyone could see. Dave went into
"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and I jumped from the doorway up into the air
(like he does) and tried to squeal like he does. I remember jamming to
it on the dirt floor for a little bit.
Then it was as if the concert was over, and people were milling around
everywhere. Some girl came over to me and said that my mom wanted
me. I waded through the people (and went past Dave...I had to squeeze
myself between him and someone he was talking to...I remember putting my
hand on his back and saying, "pardon me" as I went through) to find her
in the audience. She was with a friend and I got her (but not the
friend) and took her backstage. I asked her if she had known it was
me up there (because I was dressed funny, I was in this big black magician's
hat). We started walking around the building and I was telling her
that they were remodeling and had taken out lockers in the hallway so that
preschool teachers could put up cabinets. Then we were in some bathroom
(or either backstage?) where we were sitting at these dressing tables with
mirrors and big lights. My mom was telling some woman sitting nearby
(that we didn't know) about the "old days" and mentioned something about
the audience.
I remember thinking, "I need to go back and thank Dave and tell him what
a great concert it was, and that we all missed him and wished that he was
still in Van Halen."
