06/04/98 - "Someone Like You" - Daryl Hall
Me and Walter were on a run somewhere, we finished the run and went to a local diner to eat. We went in, sat down, and a waitress came over and took our orders. She pulled off the slip on her pad, and put it on our table. I thought it was strange, but thought, "ok, whatever." Then Walter disappeared. I sat there waiting, watching the other locals eating. Some man from the kitchen (behind me) came out and said (real softly), "Is there a Denise Vaughan here?" I jumped up and raised my hand "yes that's me" so he handed me this portable phone (disgustedly, as if I'd interrupted him). I answered the phone and it was Walter, telling me that Roberts cannot dispatch us because the computer is saying we are somewhere that we are not. Dispatch tried to change it, but it still didn't work. So Walter told me, "Go ahead and eat without me, just get mine in a to-go box and I'll eat it later". And I remember feeling sorry for him that his food would be completely cold by the time he got it. I gave the phone back to the kitchen guy.
So I went back to my table and sat down and waited on the food. Then all of a sudden I was outside in the parking lot, as if I had gone out to the truck for something. I went back into the restaurant, and all the lights were off, as if they had closed up for the night. I thought, "I know all those customers didn't come out that quick, they must still be in there." I stood in the doorway, and I yelled into the darkness, "What the hell is going on?!" No one answered so I repeated myself and walked into the darkness. Finally some waitress turned on the light and everyone was still sitting at the tables eating as if nothing had happened. I began to feel as if they were trying to keep me out of the restaurant, as if I was the butt of a nasty joke. I thought, "What is wrong with these people?" The waitress got snooty with me and I got furious. I started yelling at her, including some choice obscenities. I remember saying, "I've been waiting TWO f***ing hours to get this lousy meal and I'm still waiting! You must be some kind of terrible waitress, no wonder you don't make any money! We're stuck here in the middle of bumblef***, we've been driving all night, we're tired, aggravated, and HUNGRY and our dispatcher is telling us we can't go anywhere because [imitating voice] 'the computer is messed up'...would it be so hard to get us our lousy food???" The waitress just stared at me, dumbfounded. Everyone was looking at me. The waitress seemed unconcerned, as if she didn't care whether we ever got our food or not. Walter was back at the table again, looking extremely tired and disgusted. I asked him, "Ya wanna go someplace else?" and he just shook his head like he was too tired to get upset about the whole deal. I was amazed at how long it was taking, or more importantly, why I waited that long for it!
Suddenly we were in a McDonald's and some girl passed by me and I recognized her. Her name didn't come immediately to mind, but I realized it as I watched her walk across the room. I told Walter, "There's Michelle. Michelle Zanewicki" [sic-it's Zydwyck] I even spelled it out. Michelle said from across the room, "Denise, you can have him--I'm through with him." She was referring to a guy laying down (asleep? drunk? stoned?) in a booth behind us...the guy was a combination of David Lee Roth and Billy Squier and he was passed out or something.
